Wounded Marines find peace through backcountry fishing and more from Keys Net - Weekly Newsletter
- Life would be easier if Key West and Tallahassee were not separated by a 12-hour drive, former state Rep. Ron Saunders said Friday, days after ending his second stint in the Florida Legislature. "I'm still deciding where to spend most of my time now," said Saunders, 58.
"I'm from the Keys and have a lot of good contacts here," he said. "But I've also got contacts in Tallahassee. I'll probably wind up trying to split time between both." - An allegedly drunk Miami-Dade man claiming ties to former Colombian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar was jailed early Friday morning on a litany of charges -- including offering a deputy sheriff $30,000 to "reduce the results of the breath test."
John Chaney, 64, of Kendall was pulled over at mile marker 37 around 2:30 a.m. after Deputy Juan Martin-Reyes spotted his black 2008 Hummer H2 traveling between 90 mph and 110 mph in the National Key Deer Refuge, where the speed limit on U.S. 1 is 35 mph.
- Cheeca Lodge and Spa’s general manager said last weekend’s All American Backcountry Fishing Tournament signaled the return of fishing as the heart of the iconic Islamorada hotel.
- A little bit of wind greeted anglers heading out on the local waters this past week, but the fishing was good for those who got out.
- In March 2011, Gunnery Sgt. Brian Meyer was in Afghanistan on his third combat tour with the U.S. Marine Corps. It would be his last.

A now-former substitute teacher in Keys schools remained jailed in lieu of $145,000 bond Friday following his arrest on Thursday for allegedly possessing a huge cache of child porn.
William Britt, 55, formerly of Cudjoe Key, is charged with 123 counts of possessing child pornography and seven counts of possessing a photograph of a sexual performance by a child. All are felonies. -
A Monroe County employee accused of skimming money from an Upper Keys trash transfer station turned himself Thursday night on a misdemeanor charge of theft and a felony charge of official misconduct.
David Sinclair, 58, of Key Largo works at the county's transfer station on Card Sound Road. He's accused of stealing $22.23 in tipping fees, although Assistant State Attorney Mark Wilson has said he believes the theft goes deeper than that. -
As day turned into night on Friday and the night extended, Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Office staff and volunteers continued conducting an automated recount of more than 32,000 ballots to determine if Ed Davidson of Marathon or John Welsh from Key West will be the next District 3 representative on the School Board.
Around 10:20 p.m., the winner was proclaimed: Davidson, 16,362 votes to Welsh's 16,146.

As the fall cool fronts sweep through every 10 days or so, the water temps steadily cool, spurring the fish to feed aggressively.
Sailfish are making an appearance on the reef in appreciable numbers, as indicated by the palpable quantity of flags flying back at the docks. Anglers are taking them as they shower bait and by live-baiting off the deeper reef edge. Ballyhoo, pilchards and goggle eyes are the baits of choice, although small blue runners will work in a pinch. -
Brisk conditions last week marked the end of October but not the end of hurricane season. Sandy reminded us all that it is not over till it is over. As things begin to settle back down, there are lots of fishing opportunities for anglers looking to fish the backcountry or offshore.

Offshore fishing has been fantastic. Party boats have been a great way to get out there. Richard Deleon from Miami caught a 35-pound “smoker” kingfish on 30-pound spinning gear aboard Capt. Chan Warner’s party boat The Gulfstream out of Key Largo last week.

Australian politics just got a bit more interesting… Take a memo; do not mess with Australian PM Gillard…
Australian PM Julia Gillard's 'misogynist' blast at Tony Abbott echoes around world
PRIME Minister Julia Gillard's parliamentary broadside against Tony Abbott has made international headlines, with one news blog praising it as an 'epic speech' by a 'badass motherf***er'.
The 15 minute impassioned speech, in which Ms Gillard accused Mr Abbott of "peddling a double standard" and having a long history of sexism and misogyny, was uploaded to YouTube and viewed around the world.
The US-based, women-focused Jezebel.com blog, owned by Gawker media and boasting millions of readers, said the video was the "best thing you'll see all day: Australia's female prime minister rips misogynist a new one in epic speech on sexism".
"She basically ripped him a new [expletive]," the site said, excerpting several "choice quotes" from the "smackdown" and describing Ms Gillard as "one badass motherf***er".
In the UK, the conservative Telegraph described the speech as a "brilliant political pivot", saying she had turned "defending the indefensible" (the Peter Slipper scandal) into a speech that cleverly shifted the focus of the entire news story.
"Watching a female Prime Minister tear apart the male leader of the Opposition with such aplomb, composure - but most importantly armed with a brilliantly impressive set of insults - backed up with dates and times of when each shocking comment was said - was the best card Gillard, ever the political animal, could have played in such a situation," the reporter said.

FBI probe of Petraeus triggered by e-mail threats from
biographer, officials say
The collapse of the career of CIA Director David Petraeus
was triggered when a woman with whom he was having an affair sent threatening
e-mails to another woman close to him, according to three senior law
enforcement officials with knowledge of the episode.
The recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went
to the FBI for protection and help tracking down the sender, according to the
officials. The FBI investigation traced the threats to Paula Broadwell, a
former military officer and Petraeus biographer, and uncovered explicit e-mails
between Broadwell and Petraeus, the officials said.

Kevin Dayhoff The Tentacle: Time to repeal Daylight Saving Time
Time to repeal Daylight Saving Time
November 7, 2012
Death to Daylight Saving Time
Kevin E. Dayhoff
Other than the benefit of the extra hour of sleep you gained
early Sunday morning when Daylight Saving Time officially ended for the year, a
gathering chorus of critics thinks the anachronistic timekeeping concept from
yesteryear is not worth the bother.
The terms, “fall back” and “spring forward” seem like such a
simple concept and have the deceptive allure and singsong of a children’s
nursery rhyme. The California
Energy Commission notes: “It's ingrained in our consciousness almost as
much as the A-B-Cs or our spelling reminder of "i before e...." And
it's a regular event … Yet in those four words is a whole collection of trivia,
facts, and common sense about Daylight Saving Time.”
Well, count me in as one of the critics who have failed to
find any “common sense” in Daylight Saving Time.
Although it was originally designed to supposedly save
energy, many agree with NBC journalist Mike Taibbi,
who recently opined that “for many people the whole spring ahead/fall
back change the clocks thing is an annoyance that doesn't make a lot of sense.”
It was Benjamin Franklin who was the first to ponder – in
1784 – the merits of maximizing the amount of daylight working hours and
reducing the need for artificial light.
Mr. Franklin is credited with advocating the value of
“daylight saving” in a satirical anonymous letter to the editor of the Journal of
Paris, which proposed, among many humorous remedies to the overuse
of candles, a tax on shutters, to be enforced by stepped-up police vigilance
and the rationing of candles… http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=5446

It was almost anti-climactic at the polls in Westminster on Tuesday afternoon.
After a year of robo-calls, tons of campaign literature, debates and nonstop news coverage, election day came to Carroll County — and the turnout was heavy and steady.
Just after 4 p.m., as temperatures dropped, there were plenty of hardy campaign workers at the polls at Westminster Elementary School. Joy Fisher and Erin Snell and Jennifer and Molly Harvilak were busy greeting voters and handing out literature in support of Question 6, the Civil Marriage Protection Act.
"Been here since the morning — and we're cold," Fisher said in between shivers… http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/carroll/news/ph-ce-election-day-1106-20121106,0,1592306.story

Many have asked my opinion on the ballot questions. There
are so many conflicting TV ads and even mailings from "Republican
Leaders" which have confused the issues.
This is how I voted and the reason why:
Against Question 1.
If passed, this would require candidates for the ORPHANS COURT JUDGES in
Prince Georges County to be lawyers. I believe lawyers can run for these
offices and if citizens elect them, they can serve, but I don't believe other
citizens should be discriminated against.
Against Question 2
This is the same as question 1 except it applies to Baltimore County.
For Question 3 This amendment removes elected officials
from office upon the conviction of a felony rather than waiting until the
sentencing. As the law is now, the elected official can appeal and appeal and
stay in office.
Against Question
4 This law permits illegal immigrants
to pay in-state tuition at our state supported colleges and universities. I
believe that if children were brought here illegally, they should follow the
procedures to become legal. Federal Law prohibits employers from hiring illegal
people so after the taxpayers pay to educate them, they are not legally allowed
to work.
Against Question 5
The Congressional Redistricting Map just does not make sense. It has been
gerrymandered so that no one can be fairly represented in Congress. For
example, what does Ocean City have in common with Taneytown or what does
Garrett County have in common with Montgomery County?
Against Question 6
This law redefines MARRIAGE as we know it. In recent years, same-sex
couples have been given many of the rights they have requested such as hospital
visitation rights. They have been offered "Civil Unions," but they
want the term "Marriage" changed. This has far reaching ramifications
such as changing the school curriculum and dangerous consequences for ministers
who preach from the Bible. Although they argue that ministers would not be
affected if they did not want to perform a wedding ceremony for a same-sex
couple, look what has happened to the Catholic hospitals and doctors who now
must perform abortions and provide birth control.
Against Question 7 This law expands gambling in Maryland.
This is a bad bill for the citizens in Maryland.
1. The schools are funded by a formula called "The
Thornton Formula" and this determines how much money each school system
should receive. The money from gaming will go into the EDUCATION TRUST FUND.
This will free up general fund money which is normally spent on education to be
used for other things. Just as money has been taken out of THE TRANSPORTATION
TRUST FUND, money will be taken out of the EDUCATION TRUST FUND for other
things.
2. Last year several bills were introduced to
"lock" the transportation trust fund so the money would only be used
for transportation purposes. These bills failed. That fund was raided for many
other uses. I don't Trust money in these trust funds to go for their intended
use.
3. The "Republican Leaders" Michael Steel and
Audrey Scott, from whom you have received mailings live in Prince Georges
County and the law is written so that the local jurisdiction where the casino
is located will receive a large percentage of the tax revenue. That is the
reason they are in favor of this bill.
4. In May, a Special Session was held to raise your taxes
and this gaming bill lowers the taxes for the casino owners.
5. SCHOOLS WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY MORE MONEY THAT THE THIRNTON
FORMULA REQUIRES. EVEN THE TEACHERS KNOW THESE STATEMEENTS IN THE AS ARE NOT
TRUE. I HAVE BEEN ON THE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE ALL THE
SPECIAL FUNDS RAIDED AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. THEY PROMISE TO "PAY
BACK" BUT DON'T. Please vote against this bill and let the legislature
come back in a regular session where all interested parties have an opportunity
