Ho Chi Minh City (Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh; About this sound listen), formerly named Saigon (Sài Gòn; About this sound listen), is the largest city in Vietnam. It was once known as Prey Nokor, an important Khmer sea port prior to annexation by the Vietnamese in the 17th century.

Under the name Saigon, it was the capital of the French colony of Cochin-china and later of the independent republic of South Vietnam from 1955--75. South Vietnam, as an anti-communist republic, fought against the communist North Vietnamese and Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, with aid from the United States and countries including Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. Saigon fell when it was captured by the communists on 30 April 1975, bringing an end to the War with its enemy's victory. Vietnam was then turned into a communist state with the South overtaken. On 2 July 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding Gia Định Province and was officially renamed Ho Chi Minh City after Hồ Chí Minh (although the name Sài Gòn is still commonly used).

The city center is situated on the banks of the Saigon River, 60 kilometers (37 mi) from the South China Sea and 1,760 kilometers (1,090 mi) south of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam...

New York Times breaking news: Indian National Congress Concedes Defeat to Opposition Leader Narendra Modi

BREAKING NEWSFriday, May 16, 2014 2:37 AM EDT
Indian National Congress Concedes Defeat to Opposition Leader Narendra Modi
The Indian National Congress, which has headed India’s government for nearly all the country’s post-Independence history, formally conceded defeat to the opposition leader Narendra Modi on Friday, as voters rendered a crushing verdict on their country’s flagging economic growth and a drumbeat of corruption scandals.
Election officials had not yet finished counting the 550 million votes cast in the five-week general elections, but the contours of Congress’s defeat quickly became clear. Rahul Gandhi, the heir apparent to the political dynasty that forms Congress party’s backbone, appeared headed for a narrow victory in his own home constituency, a stronghold he won by more than 300,000 votes in 2009.

Richard Haddad: Dads Works making positive difference - Carroll County Times: Other Voices:

There is much about Carroll County that stands out in a positive way, but “outstanding” just doesn’t seem to be a strong enough word for describing Dads Works, an extremely relevant and unique local program.

Dads Works helps fathers connect with and stay connected with their children. Its relevance has to do with how commonplace divorce has unfortunately become in our society, and with the fact that in the overwhelming number of cases of divorce, it is the father who is separated from the children of the marriage.

Research over the past few decades has shown that children from fatherless homes are more likely to become involved in drug and alcohol abuse, to drop out of school and to suffer from emotional problems. Boys from these homes are more likely to become involved in crime and to go to prison, and girls are more likely to become pregnant as teens.

A Celebration of Prettyboy Reservoir and Watershed Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prettyboy Dam.

http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2014/05/a-celebration-of-prettyboy-reservoir.html

BALTIMORE, MD (April 30, 2014) – Public Works Director Rudolph S. Chow, P.E., reminds everyone that the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) will be holding Prettyboy Day on Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prettyboy Dam.

The event is to celebrate and educate attendees about Prettyboy Dam and Reservoir, one of Baltimore's three raw drinking-water reservoirs. The event will feature live musical entertainment by singer/guitarist Dave Huber, face painting and balloon animals for the kids, educational displays, a surprise competition, and food.

Attendees of all ages can take a tour inside the Dam which will be open to the public only for this special day. Learn about Baltimore's drinking water system, resource issues and conservation efforts. Rescued native wildlife from Scales and Tales will be on display and experts from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will be on hand to tell all about them.

Last year 150 new trees were planted near the Dam. This year attendees can participate in applying protective wrappings on them. Local historian George Lang will also be on hand again with his historic archives.

“We are very happy to be able to showcase Prettyboy Reservoir and Dam, vital elements of our drinking-water system,” said Director Chow. “This is a tremendous opportunity to have fun while learning at a beautiful, outdoor location.”
Prettyboy Day is sponsored by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, the Prettyboy Watershed Alliance and RK&K. Additional support is provided by Baltimore County. The dam is located at Prettyboy Dam Road, 21120.

Prettyboy Day celebrates National Drinking Water Week, May 4-10. The theme is “What do you know about H20?” and encourages all citizens to learn more about the critical role water plays in our lives and the quality of life we enjoy because of clean drinking water.

The event and parking are free. For more information about Prettyboy Day call 410-545-6541.

Since the 1930s, warm weather and sunshine is a signal for many in Carroll and Baltimore counties to venture outdoors for biking, hiking fishing and boating trips in the Gunpowder River and Prettyboy watershed in the Hereford area. Spring has arrived just in time to help celebrate Prettyboy Reservoir Day this Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, the Prettyboy Watershed Alliance, Carroll and Baltimore County have joined forces for the one-day event as a part Earth Day celebrations and Baltimore Green Week.
