PATIENT CHARGED WITH ASSAULTS ON STATE HOSPITAL STAFF

(Sykesville, MD) -- Maryland State Police arrested and charged a state hospital patient last night after he assaulted three staff members at the facility in Carroll County.

The patient is identified as a 52-year-old male. State regulations prohibit his identification by name since he is a court-committed patient.

After consultation with the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office, the patient was charged by State Police with three counts each of attempted murder, first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, and possession/use of a dangerous/deadly weapon with intent to injure. He was processed at the Westminster Barracks and taken to the Carroll County Detention Center. After his appearance before a court commissioner, he was held in the detention center without bond.

At 10:00 p.m. yesterday, Maryland State Police at the Westminster Barracks were dispatched to Springfield Hospital, in the 6600-block of Sykesville Road, Sykesville, for the report of multiple assaults on staff. When they arrived at the hospital housing unit where the assaults occurred, troopers found the suspect patient was in custody and had been restrained by hospital staff and security.

The preliminary information learned by State Police criminal investigators indicates that at about 9:40 p.m., the patient assaulted a nursing staff member outside a medication room and attempted to stab them in the chest with a butter knife. The staff member struggled with the patient and was able to push him out of the medication room and lock the door. The staff member sustained a minor laceration to the chest and later refused medical treatment.

Two other nursing staff members were approaching the area and were both assaulted by the patient with the knife. One sustained a laceration to the neck. The other sustained lacerations to the face, hand and chest. These staff members were transported to the Carroll Hospital Center where they were treated and released.

Maryland State Police crime scene technicians responded and processed the scene for evidence. The butter knife was recovered.

A motive for the assaults is not known. The investigation is continuing.
