My American Vignettes series on exceptional Americans continues with a profile of Almon Brown Strowger, the undertaker who took on the telephone operator, and invented the forerunner to the rotary dial, which put the phone, finally, in the hands of the customer. Almon Brown Strowger was born in Penfield, near Rochester, New York, on February 11, 1839.
