Ehrlich says he will run for governor

Writing for the Baltimore Sun, Julie Bykowicz has broken the story that Ehrlich says he will run for governor on the Sun web site, 4:26 p.m. EDT, March 30, 2010.

According to Ms. Bykowicz:

Decision to challenge O'Malley comes after months-long 'listening tour'

Former Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. confirmed Tuesday that he will challenge Gov. Martin O'Malley this fall.

Ehrlich, the state's only Republican governor in a generation, lost to O'Malley, a Democrat, by six percentage points in November 2006, after one term in office. Since then, Ehrlich has opened the Baltimore branch of a North Carolina law firm and hosted a Saturday radio talk show with his wife, Kendel Ehrlich.

"Next week, I'm going to announce my candidacy for governor," Ehrlich said in a conference call with reporters Tuesday afternoon.

"There's a real sense of concern about the direction our state is taking," Ehrlich said. "We are about new ideas and proven leadership in Annapolis." Asked about the "new ideas," the former governor, who presided over the state from January 2003 to January 2007, said "stay tuned."

Ehrlich, 52, said he plans to launch his campaign with events in Rockville and at his boyhood home in Arbutus and then spend the next three days traveling to small towns across the state.
