Thousands of folks greeted the beginning of Westminster Fallfest Thursday evening. Parade watchers thronged Main Street and Longwell Avenue to watch over 60 entries march, sing, dance, and blow the horn to mark the beginning of Westminster’s annual citywide fall festival.
After the parade, folks took advantage of the unseasonably warm temperatures to pack the Westminster playground for food, rides, and activities such as making scarecrows.
Later in the evening Jennifer Mellor, Fallfest chairperson, announced the winner of three prizes awarded to entries in the parade.
The Carroll Gymnastics took first prize. Second and third prize went to two separate Girl Scout entries. Carroll Gymnastics is going to donate their $250.00 prize money to breast cancer research, said Mellor.
“It was a fantastic event,” beamed Mellor late in the evening. Community spirit was everywhere.”
Westminster Fallfest is scheduled to continue through Sunday, Sept. 26, in and around Westminster City Park.
Midnight Madness will take place tonight, 6 p.m. to midnight, when parts of Main Street will be closed for pedestrian traffic for an evening of shopping, dining, and street entertainment. Many Main Street merchants will feature special events and sales.
