Explore Carroll: DAYHOFF: More Medal of Honor recipients have Carroll County connections

After last week's column about 1st Lt. John Buffington, of Taneytown, was published ("Recalling Carroll's only recipient of Congressional Medal of Honor"), I was told of research suggesting there are more Medal of Honor winners who have connections to our county.

Shortly after the column appeared, I heard from readers from all over the world -- from here in Carroll County to Australia to South Carolina.

As much as I appreciated everyone's feedback and questions, perhaps the most valuable came from Laura Jowdy, an archivist from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society (www.cmohs.org.)

Further research after last week’s Eagle Archive column, “Recalling Carroll’s only recipient of Congressional Medal of Honor” was published, indicates that at there may be at least four Medal of Honor winners who have connections with Carroll County.  See this week's Eagle Archive for more details."

The April 3, 1908, edition of the now-defunct Westminster newspaper, the American Sentinel, carried the story of Sgt. John Ezra Buffington, who is the only Carroll County residents to have ever received the Congressional Medal of Honor...

Buffington served in Company C, 6th Maryland Volunteer Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division (Brig. Gen. Truman Seymour), Sixth Corps, commanded by General J. Warren Keifer....  http://www.explorecarroll.com/opinion/5310/recalling-carrolls-only-recipient-congressional-medal-honor/

The first section is a list of the top runners by class.  The second section is the list of the runners by place and time.  The preregistered list of participating schools is on the last page…

There were approximately 600 runners in the second heat, the fun run, which was untimed.  218 runners participated in the competitive run.

Despite the chilly spring temperature and the gray overcast skies, hundreds of runners and an equal number of fans lined the sidewalks of downtown Westminster for the 30th running of the Main Street Mile Wednesday evening.

The annual Westminster tradition announces the final arrival of spring as if the runners, fans, and family supporters run to downtown Westminster to spread the word that warmer temperatures and spring flowers are soon to follow.

The race has grown in size in the past decades and now attracts runners and families from all over the mid-Atlantic region.  The annual rite of spring is a huge community effort featuring the teamwork of the downtown merchants, Westminster Road Runners Club, Westminster Volunteer Fire Department, Police Department and Fire Police and scores of volunteers.

[…]

As is tradition, the race is run in two parts.  218 runners ran in the competitive run which took-off first at 7 p.m. sharp, which was announced this year by the booming bell of the Westminster Clock Tower which offered a perfect back-drop to the carefully choreographed chaos of the finish line frenzy near the railroad tracks.  And this year, for effect, a train came through town just after the race to add ambiance to the community event.

[…]

600 runners raced in the second portion of the race event, the Connor Smith Memorial Fun Run which features children under the age of ten-years old.

[…]

The fastest known Maryland State Trooper in this year’s race was Laura Beck, of Westminster with a time of six minutes and thirty-nine seconds, followed by Major Scott Yinger of Westminster with a time of seven minutes and two seconds – not bad for the former Westminster barrack commander and state police veteran who is just months away from retirement.

“Oh, don’t put me in the paper,” said Yinger after the race, as his wife, Charlene – who ran the race with a time of seven-minutes and thirty-nine seconds – stood by the older trooper to make sure he was okay.

Two of the oldest runners in this year’s festivities were Tami Graf, who crossed the finish line at eight-minutes and thirty-nine seconds at 74-years young.  She was followed by Yvonne Aasen, who was believed to be one of the oldest in the race at age 79 and finished with a time of nine-minutes and forty-nine seconds.

Carroll County History Project
Receives State Historic Preservation Award

We are very proud to announce that the Carroll County History Project has been selected to receive the 2011 Maryland Preservation Award for Educational Excellence by the Maryland Historical Trust.

The Carroll County History Project is an initiative to preserve the history of Carroll County, Maryland by collecting the memories of local citizens and producing documentaries about the county and its communities to be permanently archived online at www.CarrollHistory.org.

The project was selected for recognition "because of the breadth and depth of the partnerships forged throughout the development and delivery of this program, and the innovative and meaningful ways in which [the Community Media Center and its partners] are capturing and sharing Carroll County's history."

The Community Media Center, a nonprofit organization that operates Carroll County's shared public, education and government television facility, and its partners the Historical Society of Carroll County, Carroll County Public Library, the Carroll County NAACP 7014, the Human Relations Commission of Carroll County, Carroll County Genealogical Society and the Carroll County Bureau of Aging and Disabilities will each be recognized for their role in the initiative. Since its inception in 2008, the History Project has collected nearly 500 video and audio interviews.

"We are incredibly proud that the History Project was selected for this award," said Marion Ware, Executive Director of the Community Media Center. "Without these memories, a large part of Carroll County's past would be lost. We are fortunate to have the technology and expertise, as well as the support of our partners, to preserve local history and make it accessible to everyone. It's also important to recognize the residents of Carroll County who are the heart and soul of this project. We look forward to expanding it in the future with additional documentaries and integrating its content into the curriculum for the County's primary and secondary school children."

The award will be presented on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 4:00 pm in the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis.

The Maryland Historical Trust began its tradition of honoring outstanding preservation efforts throughout the state in 1975 with the creation of the Calvert Prize. In the ensuing years, five more award categories were created and 250 individuals and projects have been honored in all regions of the state. Individuals, non-profit and for-profit organizations or institutions, museums, and federal, state and local agencies are all eligible to receive MHT Preservation Awards.

The Community Media Center is a Public, Education, and Government Access Center and a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide the facilities, equipment, and technical support necessary to allow you to "Make Media That Matters" in your local community. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

We see media as a tool to encourage participation in the life of your community. This tool can be used to educate, inform, entertain, and document.

Daily Grind: New media catches Obama bribing the fourth estate

April 14th, 2011

Hear from Utah Senator Orrin hatch, Texas Congressman Jeb Hensarling and California Congressman Devin Nunes on one of the two things you can count on in life...taxes!

Obama: "I have a credit card, and I'm not afraid to use it!"

New media catches Obama bribing the fourth estate

By Howard Rich

For years, America's left-leaning mainstream media outlets have belittled and rebuked members of the new media — questioning their credibility, impugning their integrity and assigning all manner of self-serving motivations to their contributions to the marketplace of ideas.

In the immediate aftermath of the tragic Tucson shooting earlier this year, the legacy press took it a step further — essentially implying that the new media was complicit in the attack on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords by virtue of the "climate of hate" it helped create in America.

Obviously, the facts of the Tucson case quickly (and completely) debunked this theory — but not before a parade of liberal talking heads had spewed a torrent of reckless vitriol on new media outlets and the First Amendment freedom they exercise.

Fast-forward three months to April 6, when reporter Matthew Boyle of The Daily Caller published a report outlining the details of Barack Obama's socialized medicine slush fund.

Obama's 'Adult' Conversation

By Robert Romano

In February, when he presented his budget for the 2012 fiscal year, Barack Obama called for an "adult conversation" on the nation's finances.  Everyone laughed.  His was a budget that would add on average $1.08 trillion to the national debt every single year until 2021, when it would total $26.3 trillion.
Perhaps it was fitting, then, that he began the discussion by delivering a speech to college students.

More like an adolescent than an adult, Obama was threatening that he has a credit card — and he's not afraid to use it.  He's still going through puberty when it comes to having a real conversation about the debt crisis we face.  On April 13, when he delivered his plan to "pay down our debt" at George Washington University, not once did he mention the size of the gargantuan national debt, now $14.2 trillion.

Fears and facts

By Paul Driessen

The ground hadn't stopped shaking. Tsunami waters had not receded. And yet coverage of this awful natural disaster — a scene of almost unfathomable devastation and death — was already giving way to single-minded focus on radiation exposure and meltdowns.

Addressing justifiable concerns is essential, to allay fears and refocus attention on finding the missing, burying the dead, helping 450,000 displaced people, and rebuilding ravaged communities.

Like a third of nuclear plants in American service today, providing 20 percent of all US electricity, the 40-year-old Fukushima Daiichi plant is a "boiling water reactor." Uranium in fuel rods generates heat to turn water into steam that drives turbines, which power generators.

Though not designed or built according to current standards, the Japanese plant had many upgrades and enhancements over the years. For the most part, they worked.

Kevin Dayhoff - The Tentacle: The “New” American Civil War

April 13, 2011

At 4:30 A.M. on Friday, April 12, 1861, the first shots of the American Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, in the Charleston, SC harbor. We’ve been fighting the Civil War ever since.

With the outbreak of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Battle of Fort Sumter, one may only imagine that we will re-fight the Civil War for the next four years...  http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4339

Maryland State Police: update Trooper involved shooting fatally wounds Hampstead woman

MSP update Trooper involved shooting fatally wounds Hampstead woman

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 12, 2011

UPDATE: TROOPER INVOLVED SHOOTING FATALLY WOUNDS CARROLL CO. WOMAN

(HAMPSTEAD, MD) – A Carroll County woman armed with a handgun who was threatening suicide was fatally wounded

by a Maryland state trooper last night after she refused repeated orders to surrender and repeatedly pointed

the loaded gun at him.

The deceased woman is identified as Satina D. White, 40, who was living with her sister

and her sister’s teenaged daughter in the 4600-block of Upper Beckleysville Road, Hampstead, Md.  White was

pronounced dead last night at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

The trooper involved in the shooting is identified as Trooper John Warchal, a road patrol

trooper assigned to the Westminster Barrack.  Trooper Warchal is a three-year-veteran of the Maryland State

Police.

White’s sister called 911 shortly before 6:00 p.m. yesterday and requested police respond

for a domestic situation involving White, whom she said had been drinking and was threatening suicide.  The

caller said she did not feel safe with White in her home.

While troopers were en route to the scene, a second call was received informing troopers

White had armed herself with a handgun and was threatening suicide.  Her sister told the barrack police

communications operator that White said she was going to commit suicide when the police arrived.  In fear for

their safety, the sister and her teenaged daughter locked themselves in an upstairs bathroom and waited for

police to arrive.

Two troopers, a Hampstead Police officer and a Carroll County deputy sheriff arrived at

the two-story home at about 6:00 p.m.  The preliminary investigation indicates White first appeared at an

upstairs window which she knocked the screen out of and then went to a downstairs window that was open and had

no screen in it.  White repeatedly pointed the handgun at the police officers, who continued to tell her to

put it down.  Neighbors in the area told investigators they heard repeated police commands to drop the weapon.

White refused repeated commands to drop the weapon and continued to repeatedly point the

gun at the trooper.  In fear for his life, Trooper Warchal fired his Department-issued .40 caliber pistol,

wounding White.

Emergency care was immediately provided and EMS units were summoned to the scene.  White

was flown by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where

she was pronounced dead.

No law enforcement officers were injured.  Trooper Warchal was the only police officer on

the scene who fired his weapon.

Police went through the home and found White’s sister and her daughter locked in the

upstairs bathroom.  They were unharmed.

White’s sister told investigators White had been drinking alcoholic beverages Sunday

evening and again on Monday.  She said she and her sister had argued Sunday evening and again late Monday

afternoon.  She said she had told her sister she would have to leave her residence and could no longer live

there.

Investigators believe White obtained the .45 caliber pistol from a pickup truck parked in

the driveway of the home.  The truck belongs to the boyfriend of White’s sister.  He was not at the scene at

the time of the incident.  Police believe the gun belonged to him.  Investigators will follow up to verify

information about the handgun.  When police searched the truck, they found several loaded magazines and

ammunition for a .45 caliber handgun in the console area.

Members of the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, Westminster Barrack Criminal

Investigation Section, Internal Affairs Unit, and crime scene technicians from the State Police Forensic

Sciences Division responded to the scene to conduct investigations.  The scene was searched and processed

after investigators obtained a search warrant.

Trooper Warchal has been placed on administrative leave.  This is routine while the

investigation into the police-involved shooting continues.
