Carroll County History Project
Receives State Historic Preservation Award
We are very proud to announce that the Carroll County History Project has been selected to receive the 2011 Maryland Preservation Award for Educational Excellence by the Maryland Historical Trust.
The Carroll County History Project is an initiative to preserve the history of Carroll County, Maryland by collecting the memories of local citizens and producing documentaries about the county and its communities to be permanently archived online at www.CarrollHistory.org.
The project was selected for recognition "because of the breadth and depth of the partnerships forged throughout the development and delivery of this program, and the innovative and meaningful ways in which [the Community Media Center and its partners] are capturing and sharing Carroll County's history."
The Community Media Center, a nonprofit organization that operates Carroll County's shared public, education and government television facility, and its partners the Historical Society of Carroll County, Carroll County Public Library, the Carroll County NAACP 7014, the Human Relations Commission of Carroll County, Carroll County Genealogical Society and the Carroll County Bureau of Aging and Disabilities will each be recognized for their role in the initiative. Since its inception in 2008, the History Project has collected nearly 500 video and audio interviews.
"We are incredibly proud that the History Project was selected for this award," said Marion Ware, Executive Director of the Community Media Center. "Without these memories, a large part of Carroll County's past would be lost. We are fortunate to have the technology and expertise, as well as the support of our partners, to preserve local history and make it accessible to everyone. It's also important to recognize the residents of Carroll County who are the heart and soul of this project. We look forward to expanding it in the future with additional documentaries and integrating its content into the curriculum for the County's primary and secondary school children."
The award will be presented on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 4:00 pm in the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis.
The Maryland Historical Trust began its tradition of honoring outstanding preservation efforts throughout the state in 1975 with the creation of the Calvert Prize. In the ensuing years, five more award categories were created and 250 individuals and projects have been honored in all regions of the state. Individuals, non-profit and for-profit organizations or institutions, museums, and federal, state and local agencies are all eligible to receive MHT Preservation Awards.
