  • They weren't happy about it, but Florida Keys Mosquito Control Board commissioners agreed Friday to pay former Superintendent Michael Spoto $35,000 rather than have his wrongful-firing grievance heard by the Monroe County Career Service Council.

Spoto was fired in November 2010, shortly after being charged with felony theft for misappropriating three district cell phones in 2007.
  • When a paddlewheel dinner boat called the Crystal Queen sailed its maiden voyage in waters off the coast of Atlantic City in the early 1990s, the U.S. Coast Guard certified 153 passengers and crew members as a safe load.
  • The Monroe County School Board in a meeting on Tuesday supported Chairman John Dick's proposal to give Glynn Archer Elementary School to the city of Key West for use as a city hall in exchange for space to park buses in the Lower Keys.
  • Winter is here, although it does not really feel like it with daytime temperatures around the mid to upper 70s. This past week has been a windy one, but the bite is on both offshore and in the backcountry.
  • A plan to create a large no-fishing zone within Biscayne National Park near north Key Largo could remain under review by federal officials until next summer.
  • A new Everglades National Park management plan that could add boating rules to Florida Bay likely will spend most of the coming year being reworked, a park planner says.

  • While names are being held close to the vest, it appears the Fishermen's Community Hospital board of directors is close to choosing a new top administrator.
  • Q: How do I find a successor for my business? I own a very profitable company here in the Keys. With all of the money I make, you'd think it would be easy to find and train a bright young man (or woman) who could one day buy me out and take over the business. I've tried this twice so far, with two miserable failures. Do you have any clients who have done this successfully? What's the secret?

The Problem with Freddie Mac was the Bailout, Not Newt Gingrich

Are the presidential debates helping or hurting the Republican Party, the conservative cause, and the Tea Party?  They are the defining characteristic of this electoral cycle, but do they hurt because of all the round-robin criticism of the candidates, or help by making the eventual nominee a stronger candidate?  On balance, do you think they help or hurt? VOTE NOW

CarolineGlick.com: Tom Friedman's losing battle

CarolineGlick.com / December 20, 2011

Tom Friedman's losing battle

For decades New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman balanced his substantively anti-Israel positions with repeated protestations of love for Israel.

His balancing act ended last week when he employed traditional anti-Semitic slurs to dismiss the authenticity of substantive American support for Israel.

Channeling the longstanding anti-Semitic charge that Jewish money buys support for power-hungry Jews best expressed in the forged 19th century Protocols of the Elders of Zion and in John Mearshimer's and Stephen Walt's 2007 book The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy, Friedman denied the significance of the US Congress's overwhelming support for Israel.

As he put it, "I sure hope that Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, understands that the standing ovation he got in Congress this year was not for his politics. That ovation was bought and paid for by the Israel lobby."
