South Vietnam, as an anti-communist republic, fought against the communist North Vietnamese and Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, with aid from the United States and countries including Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. Saigon fell when it was captured by the communists on 30 April 1975, bringing an end to the War with its enemy's victory. Vietnam was then turned into a communist state with the South overtaken. On 2 July 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding Gia Định Province and was officially renamed Ho Chi Minh City after Hồ Chí Minh (although the name Sài Gòn is still commonly used).

New York Times breaking news: Indian National Congress Concedes Defeat to Opposition Leader Narendra Modi

BREAKING NEWSFriday, May 16, 2014 2:37 AM EDT
Indian National Congress Concedes Defeat to Opposition Leader Narendra Modi
The Indian National Congress, which has headed India’s government for nearly all the country’s post-Independence history, formally conceded defeat to the opposition leader Narendra Modi on Friday, as voters rendered a crushing verdict on their country’s flagging economic growth and a drumbeat of corruption scandals.
Election officials had not yet finished counting the 550 million votes cast in the five-week general elections, but the contours of Congress’s defeat quickly became clear. Rahul Gandhi, the heir apparent to the political dynasty that forms Congress party’s backbone, appeared headed for a narrow victory in his own home constituency, a stronghold he won by more than 300,000 votes in 2009.

There is much about Carroll County that stands out in a positive way, but “outstanding” just doesn’t seem to be a strong enough word for describing Dads Works, an extremely relevant and unique local program.

Dads Works helps fathers connect with and stay connected with their children. Its relevance has to do with how commonplace divorce has unfortunately become in our society, and with the fact that in the overwhelming number of cases of divorce, it is the father who is separated from the children of the marriage.

Research over the past few decades has shown that children from fatherless homes are more likely to become involved in drug and alcohol abuse, to drop out of school and to suffer from emotional problems. Boys from these homes are more likely to become involved in crime and to go to prison, and girls are more likely to become pregnant as teens.
