Rare early photographs of Peking by Thomas Child in the exhibit, “Qing Dynasty Peking: Thomas Child’s Photographs,” at China Exchange in London.:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/behold/2015/11/10/rare_early_photographs_of_peking_by_thomas_child_in_the_exhibit_qing_dynasty.html

"In 1870, 29-year-old Thomas Child packed his camera and traveled to Peking (now known as Beijing) for a five-year contract as a gas engineer with the Imperial Maritime Customs Service, leaving behind a wife and three children in England. Before 1861, the city was almost entirely closed to foreigners, and by the time Child arrived, there were still only around 100 foreigners living there. The city was rarely photographed.

Over the course of two decades in the Chinese capital, Child managed an incredible feat, taking nearly 200 photographs—the earliest comprehensive survey of Peking and its surroundings—in his free time. The photos show shops and crowds, important architectural features, trade and commerce, and marriage and funeral rituals. Images from the Stephan Loewentheil Historical Collection of China Photography, which includes the finest collection of Child’s Peking photographs, are on display in the exhibit “Qing Dynasty Peking: Thomas Child’s Photographs” at London’s China Exchange from Nov. 10–15.

“Clearly Child was an explorer, and it is obvious he wanted to share his understanding of Chinese culture,” Stacey Lambrow, the show’s curator, said via email."

Jonathan S Tobin – Commentary Mag: Palestinians Get Their Wish

Palestinians Get Their Wish

JONATHAN S. TOBIN / NOV. 25, 2015

After two months of incessant attacks on Israeli civilians that have taken a mounting toll of lives, Prime Minister Netanyahu announced on Monday that he would order steps to limit the ability of Palestinians to slaughter Jews.

Separate bypass roads would be created for Jews in the West Bank that would separate traffic and make it harder for Palestinians terrorists to treat traffic jams at road junctions as a killing ground. Inspections of Palestinian cars on those roads will continue. To deter terrorists, the government will also revoke permission for family members of killers to work in Israel. In other words, the terror surge has not only accomplished nothing for the Palestinians but is leading to measures that will make their lives harder. Which means the Palestinian Authority, which has helped incite this madness in which their people have gone out to stab, shoot and firebomb any Jew they can get near, has gotten its wish.

Much like their Hamas rivals, who triggered the 50-day war with Israel by launching terror raids and then raining down thousands of rockets on Israeli cities, towns and villages, the PA is actually quite pleased with the results of its campaign of incitement.

The same international public opinion that has viewed the stabbing intifada with indifference will now quickly go into overdrive denouncing Netanyahu’s moves. We’ll hear a lot about “apartheid roads” — a term used in the New York Times story about the announcement. The checkpoints to stop potential terrorists will be termed a deliberate attempt to harass and humiliate proud and peaceful Palestinians who only want a state of their own. The crimes of those Palestinians who use knives to kill any Jew in sight will be rationalized as the product of their frustration with the lack of peace and an understandable protest against the oppression of occupation.

Update - Home damaged in early morning Westminster fire, no one injured

November 25, 2015 S. Wayne Carter Jr. Carroll County Times

More than 50 firefighters from 10 companies in four counties were needed to get an early Wednesday morning fire under control in Westminster.

No injuries were reported, and it's unclear if anyone was home at the time of the blaze, according to an emailed report from Westminster Vol. Fire Company spokesman Kevin Dayhoff…

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which appears to have originated in the carport of the one-story, single family home in the 500 block of Old Baltimore Road off Malcolm Drive, according to Dayhoff. The fire quickly spread to the adjacent house and a nearby vehicle and equipment trailer.

Firefighters received the call around 1:33 a.m., were on the scene by 1:37 a.m. and had the fire under control within an hour, according to Dayhoff.

About 50 firefighters from Westminster, Reese, Pleasant Valley, Gamber, Hampstead and Sykesville companies were dispatched in addition to firefighters from Reisterstown and Glyndon in Baltimore County, a unit from York County and an air support unit from Howard County, according to Dayhoff.

Please be fire-safe out there for the holidays. As we were wrapping-up operations from the Old Baltimore Road fire, many of us exchanged our goodbyes and “Happy Holidays,” and in the dry dark humor of firefighters, many folks remarked how much it is a drag to see each other in the middle of the night.

After-all, face it, when we see each other in the middle of the night it is often as a result of a fire, traffic accident, illness or family tragedy. One firefighter told the truth, “Oh this is the season when we will see a lot of each other.” Sadly it is true. Although more research is needed, it always seems that fires and accidents increase in number during the holiday season. Be safe out there.

Update: 3:25 p.m., Nov. 25, 2015

No injuries were reported. There were “two individuals at home when the fire started,” according to DSFM Bruce D. Bouch, director of public education and media affairs with the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

According to a recent release by the fire marshal’s office, the cause of the fire was “Accidental due to ashes being placed in a plastic bag and put next to the shed.”

“During the winter months and the holiday season, it is especially important to dispose of all fireplace, cooking grill and wood stove ashes safely in a fireproof container away from the house and certainly away from anything combustible. Pour some water on the ashes – be fire safe to protect your property and your family,” said Dayhoff

“It is important to note that the folks who were home at the time of this fire got out safely because they had a working smoke alarm and the alarm alerted them that there was a fire... Take this opportunity to check your smoke alarm before friends and family visit for the holidays,” said Dayhoff

Firefighters and first responders see a little too much of each other during the holiday season. The fire marshal’s office and the Westminster fire department take this opportunity to remind you to not have first responders over to your house this holiday season as uninvited guests.

“Although we are very friendly, this time of the year, we are way too serious to attend your holiday get-together in the event of a fire. Ensure your guests are aware of all available exits if a fire would occur… The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. And if you are going to be careless, have extra food available in case 50 firefighters need to stop by in the middle of the night to come tromping through your house. Happy holidays from your local Carroll County fire department of the fire marshal’s office.

Conservative Mauricio Macri wins Argentina's presidential election promising economic reform

Nov. 23, 2015

Conservative opposition candidate Mauricio Macri has won Argentina's presidential election after promising business-friendly reforms to spur investment in the struggling economy.

Key points:

Mauricio Macri wins more than 52 per cent of the vote, election body says

Conservative president-elect vows economic reforms

Ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli couldn't distance himself from Cristina Fernandez, analyst says

Mr Macri's supporters swarmed to the Obelisk in the heart of Buenos Aires' theatre district for a giant street party as subdued ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli conceded defeat.

Argentina's election body said Mr Macri had 52.1 per cent of votes and Mr Scioli had 47.9 per cent with returns in from 91.5 per cent of polling stations.

"This the beginning of a new era that has to carry us toward the opportunities we need to grow and progress," Mr Macri told supporters at his headquarters.

In a sign of Argentines' weariness with a spluttering economy, rising crime and corruption, Mr Macri had gone into the run-off election with a comfortable lead in opinion polls over Mr Scioli, the candidate of outgoing president Cristina Fernandez.
