New University Of Oklahoma Diversity Chief Was Discriminated Against As A Student There

By JUSTIN JUOZAPAVICIUS Posted: 04/10/2015

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- The University of Oklahoma's new chief of diversity programs says he knows why he's the right fit for the job after a racist video roiled the school last month: He experienced discrimination when he was a student at the Norman campus in the 1990s.

India leads rescue of foreign nationals, including Americans, trapped in Yemen - The Washington Post #YemenEvacuation

India leads rescue of foreign nationals, including Americans, trapped in Yemen - The Washington Post By Ishaan Tharoor April 8, 2015

Yemen is in the midst of a spiraling crisis. A Saudi-led bombing campaign against the country's Houthi rebels has led to stark warnings of a looming humanitarian disaster. Food is running out, the water supply is dwindling, and hundreds of Yemeni civilians have perished.

Things are also tough for foreign nationals trapped in the escalating conflict. The Saudi-led offensive has virtually caused all flights in and out of the country to be canceled; main seaports are either blockaded or in the midst of battles between rival militias. Embassies have been shuttered.

More so than any other nation, India has taken the lead in the rescue of foreigners trapped in Yemen, evacuating more than 550 foreigners from 32 countries, including a dozen Americans and three Pakistanis.

[...]

The scale of the Indian effort has spurred a fair amount of pride and triumphalism among Indians on social media, which you can find under the #YemenEvacuation hashtag.
It's also led to a moment of bonhomie between India and archrival Pakistan. On Wednesday, Indian officials acknowledged that authorities in Islamabad had arranged for the evacuation of 11 Indians aboard a Pakistani naval vessel and flew them on a special plane from Karachi to India.

Things are moving fast...

Well my friends, it’s down to the wire now.  We’ll have marathon sessions on the floor of the House of Delegates tomorrow, Saturday, and Monday.  If we don’t pass a budget by midnight on Monday we’ll have to make use of the extension Governor Hogan granted us via executive order late last week.  Hopefully that won’t be necessary, but if that’s what it takes to get this state on the right track then that’s exactly what we’ll do.

Here are a few important bills that are still up in the air…
  • Passed the House 139-1
  • Awaiting passage in the Senate
  • Passed the Senate unanimously
  • Awaiting passage in the House
  • Passed the Senate unanimously
  • Awaiting passage in the House
  • Passed the Senate unanimously
  • Awaiting passage in the House
  • Passed the Senate 46-1
  • Awaiting passage in the House
Of course this is just a sample of the myriad legislation we’ve seen come through Annapolis this year.  If you have a particular bill you’re interested in please don’t hesitate to contact me and I’ll give you the latest details.  Thanks as always for reading my weekly update.  Have a wonderful day!

This post originally appeared on Business Insider.
Microsoft on Friday updated its approach to “Do Not Track” for all future versions of its Web browsers, saying it “will no longer enable it as the default state.”
“Do Not Track” is all about protecting your online privacy. It’s a simple mechanism on most Web browsers that lets you opt out of tracking from third parties, including websites you don’t visit.
As the standards around “Do Not Track” keep evolving, so do the public policies. TheWorld Wide Web Consortium (W3C) just offered up a new draft that sheds light on the new standard (Microsoft bolded the final line for added emphasis):

Editor’s note: Grammy, you were correct, this is a fascinating article… / April 9, 2015

The Longboat Key Town Commission’s Tuesday workshop started 15 minutes late. The reason: Commissioners, who had a joint meeting with the Manatee County Commission in Bradenton, were stuck in traffic.

Seasonal traffic is in part a factor of living in what many call “paradise.” On Longboat Key, the year-round population is just less than 7,000. At peak spring season, the population swells to 22,000, meaning more cars on the road.

But a host of other factors contribute to Longboat Key’s traffic woes, and they mostly lie beyond the town’s borders and jurisdiction, in the two entrances to the island.

Secret Service-sexual misconduct: High-ranking supervisor suspended after allegations of misconduct and potential criminal activity.:

By Josh Voorhees

The Secret Service has yet another party problem on its hands.
The agency confirmed Wednesday evening that it had placed a high-ranking supervisor on administrative leave and suspended his security clearance as a result of what a spokesman called “allegations of misconduct and potential criminal activity.”

The Washington Post, citing a pair of law enforcement officials in the know, filled in the details: A female agent is accusing her married boss, Xavier Morales, of making “unwanted sexual advances” and grabbing her at the agency headquarters after they returned to the office following a party at a downtown brewpub on the night of March 31:

This day in history: Maryland State Police remembers a Fallen Hero: Officer Kuhn, motorcycle accident on April 8, 1934

MSP remembers a Fallen Hero who ended his watch with the Maryland State Police 81 years ago today.

Officer Kuhn, 26 years old, was operating his motorcycle, equipped with a sidecar on April 8, 1934 when he was killed.

He crashed into the rear of a wagon without regulation rear lights. Believed to have been blinded by the bright headlights of an oncoming vehicle, Kuhn's sidecar hit a wheel of the wagon. He was thrown from the motorcycle onto the concrete roadway near Mardela Springs outside of Salisbury.

Why Retailers Ask for Your ZIP Code By ANN CARRNS APRIL 1, 2013

Why Retailers Ask for Your ZIP Code By ANN CARRNS APRIL 1, 2013

I usually dread shopping in stores. Trying on clothes is tedious, and sometimes completing the actual purchase is, too. Retailers like to ask for all sorts of information as they’re ringing up your merchandise, like your e-mail address and ZIP code. I just want to pay and be on my way, and they give me the third degree.

[…]

The result can be unwanted catalogs and other junk mail. (To get a simple idea of the cumulative impact of each tidbit of information, try searching for your name alone on Google search, and then search again using your name and ZIP code, and see how much more data comes back. If you have an uncommon name — as I do — it’s eye opening.)

In March, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that collecting ZIP codes for credit card purchases violates a state consumer protection law… http://bucks.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/01/why-retailers-ask-for-your-zip-code/?_r=1

A new book on the Clintons says Chelsea Clinton referred to the Secret Service personnel assigned to protect her and her parents as "pigs."

When an agent angrily confronted her for her bratty remark, she said, "Well, that’s what my mother and father call you."
