Keys Net - Weekly Newsletter

Keysnet.com
  • A smattering of rain that fell over part of the Middle Keys late Thursday afternoon -- part of what was basically a mini-tornado -- doesn't portend much imminent rain in the arid island chain.
  • With an eye on curbing panhandling in tourist-heavy Old Town Key West, Mayor Craig Cates is working on a new ordinance that could confine the activity to designated areas.
  • As the annual budget wrangle continues at the Monroe County School District, the president of the local teachers union is working with top administrators to soften the potential impact $7.8 million in cuts could have on teachers and, in turn, the students they serve.
  • “A day in May,” something we talk about and look forward to throughout the whole year. Warm weather and great fishing are the two things that come to mind for me when I think about fishing the areas of the Upper Keys both offshore and on Florida Bay this month.
  • We're settling nicely into our summer pattern of single-digit wind speeds and calm seas, which portends well for offshore fishing.

There are plenty of schoolie dolphin for the taking, plus some fish pushing the 40-pound mark. There's also a decent blackfin tuna bite at the humps.
  • If there is a month to really get excited about fishing it has to be May. The action is hot whether you venture offshore or head outback in Florida Bay. There is something for everyone.
  • Citizens Property Insurance Corp. will return to the private re-insurance market to help pay for hurricane claims during the upcoming season in an attempt to begin weaning the state-backed insurer off taxpayer assessments in the event of a catastrophic storm.
  • By the accounts of most veteran law enforcement officers who have patrolled the annual Hospitality Expo off Whale Harbor in years past, this week was pretty tame.
  • Pat Croce has purchased majority ownership of the Green Parrot in Key West.
