I say with a sigh,
With the snow piled so high,
It's time to write about anything I know,
Other than the snow and the cold.
If I may be so bold.
So let's talk about baseball? I'm happy to report that this past Wednesday, the Baltimore Orioles pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Sarasota, Fla.

Carroll County has always had a love affair with baseball. Some of my best memories of growing up in Carroll came from listening to Orioles baseball on WTTR or getting together with friends and family to attend Little League or Babe Ruth games. Baseball has been a favorite topic for many local history writers. And why not? Writing about baseball is fun.

Sarasota Florida - Palm trees swayed to a light breeze and sea gulls volunteered play-by-play commentary with the temperature in the lower 70s as the Orioles pitchers and catchers took the field Thursday for the first day of spring training in their new training facilities in Sarasota after spending the pre-season the last 14 years in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The Williams family of Westminster Maryland was also there and delighted to have had the opportunity to share a light-hearted moment with Orioles manager Dave Trembley at the first day of spring training workouts at Ed Smith Stadium in sunny Sarasota Florida.

Kenny Williams and his wife, Barbara Schildwachter Williams, and their sons, Jeremy and Jonathan, from the Greens off Royer Road in Westminster were happy to be away from the cold - and visiting the Orioles’ spring training camp.

“Yeah, I’m got tired of shoveling snow,” said Mr. Williams, a landscape contractor by trade. The temperature was hovering in the 30s at home in Westminster. “We came down here (to Sarasota) to get away from the snow and the cold,” he said with a broad smile.

Jeremy Williams, an 8th grader at West Middle School in Westminster, was excited to be at spring training. “My favorite player is Brian Roberts… He plays second base.”

Roberts, the all-star player from the Durham – Chapel Hill area of North Carolina and the other “position players will have their first day of training next Tuesday… the 23rd,” said Orioles director of public relations Monica Barlow.

After being drafted by the Orioles in 1999, Roberts was brought up to the major leagues in 2001, after playing for several of the organization’s farm teams, including a number of games in Frederick, MD in 2000.

Meanwhile Jonathan Williams, a 6th grader at West Middle, didn’t have a favorite player – he was just happy to be warm.

Barbara Williams explained, “This is our third winter trip to Sarasota. We’re big Orioles fans. We’re glad they’re here… This is our first time visiting spring training. We really enjoy Sarasota. It’s warm…”

Trembley displayed a good sense of humor as he spent several minutes signing autographs, answering questions and talking about spring training with several hundred Orioles baseball fans.

“We’re excited to be here,” said Trembley referring to the team returning to Sarasota. “We’re looking forward to good year and for right now starting a long-tern relationship with Sarasota.”

The Orioles have not trained in Sarasota since 1995.

After two rebuilding years and a 64-98 record in 2009, the Orioles are looking forward to a fresh new start to this season in their upgraded facilities that will combine the team’s minor and major league operations in one place.

In the past the two operations were several hours apart, making the coordination of pre-season difficult.

The Birds took over the training facility, at the 20-year-old, 9,000-seat Ed Smith Stadium, from the Cincinnati Reds who had moved-on to a facility in the U.S. southwest.

Workers were busy throughout the day putting the finishing touches on preparing the stadium for the first home game on March 3rd against the Tampa Bay Rays. Ticket sales have been brisk for the sixteen Orioles spring training games against 10 different opponents, said Barlow.

“We’re thrilled… Sarasota has been so welcoming. We’re glad to be here,” said Barlow as she multi-tasked corralling a large contingent of Japanese reporters and photographers who were there covering Koji Uehara, the right-handed pitcher from Osaka, Japan.

Many fans are hoping that the good crop of young players will add to the team this year as Uehara returns for his second year with the Birds to shore-up the bullpen.

There are also great hopes for the off-season moves that witnessed the Birds signing free agent third baseman Miguel Tejada, starting pitcher Kevin Millwood, first baseman Garrett Atkins and closing pitcher Mike Gonzalez, observed Barlow.

Barlow also noted that the organization is looking for good results from youngsters in the outfield, Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, and Nolan Reimold; young pitchers Brad Bergesen, Jason Berken, Dave Hernandez, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman; and Matt Wieters behind the plate at the catcher position.

Meanwhile as the fans in the Maryland area are looking forward to warmer weather and the upcoming baseball season, the fans at spring practice, the coaches and the players all share Barlow’s enthusiasm that maybe, just maybe, this is the year for the Birds.

DAYHOFF: SCRA Military relief provisions of past offer practical help today

EAGLE ARCHIVE

The dire straits of our local and national economy continues to dominate the news these days. Despite of what our national and state leaders tell us, things are still bad out there for families, especially for the number of people losing their homes to foreclosure.

Locally, the ability to overcome financial challenges may have something to do with the collective history and personality of Carroll County.

When Carroll was formed Jan. 19, 1837, our nation was entering one of the worst depressions in its history.

According to Carol Lee in "Legacy of the Land," by 1843, a local newspaper was carrying "an average of twenty" bankruptcy and foreclosure notices a week.

Today, on a national level, what is even more distressing is the number of foreclosures on the homes of the veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars is on the increase.

Many news accounts of such shabby treatment of our veterans, by many of our nation's largest financial institutions, has occurred despite the fact that the federal laws related to the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act financially protect military personnel. These provisions have been on the books, in one form or another, since the Civil War… http://www.explorecarroll.com/community/5163/military-relief-provisions-past-offer-practical-help-today/

CULLETON: They who fail to learn from history are doomed to butcher it

The history of Carroll County is enshrined in records somewhere, and columnist Kevin Dayhoff reminds us of interesting or amusing tidbits in his space here in The Eagle.

He follows a tradition of reciting facts so the current generation doesn't forget -- or worse, distort -- what came before.

But not everyone has Kevin's respect for the historical record. One of the items that is to be cut from Maryland's education budget is a mandatory test in government, what we used to call "Civics." … http://www.explorecarroll.com/opinion/5167/they-who-fail-learn-history-are-doomed-butcher-it/

The Globe and Mail - DON TAPSCOTT: Tunisia, Egypt and the coming generational explosion

Tunisia, Egypt and the coming generational explosion

DON TAPSCOTT

The anti-government uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt are featuring prominently in discussions here at Davos. And rightly so. The world is a powder keg as a demographic tidal wave of young people enter a jobless workforce and societies that need deep political and social reform.

To me, 2011 is playing out in hyper speed. In my year-end forecast for 2011, I argued that “Worldwide generational conflict will grow. Around the planet young adults are asserting themselves in the workplace and in political arenas. Protests against entrenched governments will increase in frequency and severity.”

I have no satisfaction about how quickly this forecast is coming true. A new youth radicalization is under way for three reasons.

First, there is a massive generation of young people coming of age. Born between 1977 and 1997, the children of the baby boom in North America outnumber their parents. The echo is larger than the boom itself. In South America the demographic bulge is huge, and even bigger in Africa, the Mideast and Asia. A majority of people in the world are under the age of 30 and 27 per cent are under the age of 15.

Second, this generation is the first to grow up digital. They have been bathed in bits; computers, the Internet, and interactive technologies are a fundamental part of the experience of youth. I am a digital immigrant, while my children are digital natives. When I was growing up I was the passive recipient of broadcast television. When young people today are at a computer, they are interacting, searching, authenticating, remembering, collaborating, composing their thoughts, and organizing information. They interact with the media and know how to inform themselves and use technology to get things done.

Third, as they become adults, they are entering a world that is broken. Youth unemployment is high around the world. In Spain more than 40 per cent of young people are without work. In France the rate is higher than 20 per cent. Many failing institutions are in need of reform. Hosni Mubarak has been President of Egypt for almost 30 years, and most people think he wants his son to succeed him. In Tunisia, Ben Ali assumed the presidency through a bloodless coup in 1987. Driven out of power by a citizen revolt, he and his family were forced to flee the country. Throughout the Mideast there are undemocratic regimes with poor human rights records. Women want to be part of the work force but in many countries are denied full opportunities to do so.

Carroll County MD Sheriff’s Deputy injured in traffic mishap

By Kevin Dayhoff

Posted 2/10/11

Sergeant Brad Brown, a twenty-year veteran of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, suffered minor injuries earlier this afternoon after he was involved in a traffic accident.

According to Sheriff’s office spokesperson, Major Phil Kasten, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Brown was traveling westbound along Route 140 approaching the intersection of Tyrone Road when his car collided with a 2006 Jeep Liberty operated by Deborah Elaine Donlan, aged 61 of Westminster.

Brown was not responding to a police call for at the time, but traveling routinely with traffic.

Kasten reports that according to witness statements, Donlan failed to yield to oncoming traffic as she turned the Jeep from southbound Tyrone Road onto eastbound Route 140, crossing in front of the deputy’s car.

Brown was also taken to the hospital.  He “suffered some minor lacerations to his face and burns to his hand from the air bag.  He’s been treated and released,” said Kasten early this evening in a phone interview with the Carroll Eagle.

“Dolan was taken to Carroll Hospital Center with chest pains.  She was treated and released,” said Kasten.

Traffic investigators from the Sheriff’s Office are investigating the collision.  Charges are pending the outcome of that investigation.

The Fall of the Strongmen

The Fall of the Strongmen

Current events background.....short read for so much information.

THE FALL OF THE STRONGMEN
The attempt to establish a post-colonial order of kings and strongmen to replace the British and French colonial rule over the Arab Muslim world was doomed from the start. Some of the kings were overthrown by native officers who had been trained by the British and the French to fight their wars. The officers who overthrew them became strongmen themselves.
The recently deposed Ben Ali was a Tunisian officer trained in French and American schools, who had helped push out the French and his predecessor. Egypt's Mubarak was an Air Force officer who replaced Sadat, who replaced Nasser-- all members of the Free Officers Movement which overthrew the Egyptian monarchy... http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/2011/01/fall-of-strongmen.html
