KeysNet.com: This week in Florida Keys news Saturday, March 10, 2012

  • An investigation into whether former Monroe County Technical Services Administrator Lisa Druckemiller stole and re-sold roughly $6,000 worth of county Apple iPads and iPhones to co-workers and family members is about to hit full stride.
  • Florida Keys Community College's presidential search committee on Friday identified nine semi-finalists to replace President Larry Tyree, whose contract expires on June 30.

The 11-member panel, meeting on the college's Stock Island campus, whittled down a list of 19 candidates to the nine semi-finalists. There was an initial pool of 43 applicants when the March 1 deadline to apply hit.
  • Have a pet python or an iguana that's outgrown its cage or some other exotic animal you no longer want or can handle?
  • This past Sunday afternoon we experienced the passing of a powerful front that reminded us all that March is here, bringing with it strong winds and cooler temperatures into the Florida Keys.
  • Well, folks, March is roaring in like an angry lion. And until the wind velocity subsides toward the weekend, I do not recommend going out on your own. Certainly not on the Atlantic side. Nothing puts a damper on a day of fishing like having to call the U.S. Coast Guard for assistance.
  • Chris Maroney of Stuart caught a tournament record of 118 inches of redfish and snook to win the Backcountry Fly Championship that ended Feb. 26.
  • Question: We have a bookkeeper that comes in once a month and prepares an income statement. For the past several months, my husband and I are sure the statements are wrong. They keep showing we are making a nice profit, yet we never seem to have enough cash to pay off all the bills. We even have to struggle to make payroll.

  • The culinary rumor mill went into high gear last September when the sign in front of Chanticleer Restaurant in Islamorada was hand-painted, "Gone Fishin'." Owner chef Jean-Charles Berruet had, indeed, retired to enjoy his other passion, fishing, and turned the space over to local chef Michael Ledwith.

According to DiscoverSouthCarolina.com, “McClellanville is situated on the Atlantic coast, on land surrounded by Francis Marion National Forest and has traditionally derived its livelihood from the sea and coastal marshes by fishing, shrimping and oystering. In 1989 the town was devastated by the full brunt of Hurricane Hugo, which destroyed homes, fishing boats, trees and much of the picturesque character of this historic fishing village. The stronger north side of the eyewall passed directly over the village. Residents who took refuge in Lincoln High School, which had been designated as a storm shelter, were surprised to be flooded by a storm surge which threatened to drown all the refugees. Helping one another, in pitch darkness, they were all able to get into the space above the false ceilings in the building and no one was lost.”

The Peace Movement Needs Kucinich, With or Without Congress and more from TruthOut

Public-Sector Banks: From Black Sheep to Global Leaders
Ellen Brown, Truthout: "Public-sector banking is a concept that is relatively unknown in the United States. Only one state - North Dakota - owns its own bank. North Dakota is also the only state to escape the credit crisis of 2008, and has sported a budget surplus every year since, but skeptics write this off to coincidence or other factors. The common perception is that government bureaucrats are bad business people. To determine whether government-owned banks are assets or liabilities, then, we need to look farther afield."

On International Women's Day, Celebrate Feminist Victories of 2011
Christine Ahn, Women's Media Center: "On International Women's Day, we have a lot to celebrate. Rarely are feminist victories recognized by the mainstream media, or even for that matter, by our very own women's movements. So the Global Fund for Women decided it was time to honor some significant wins that women's groups have achieved around the world, from the courtroom to the court of public opinion. In the past year, women's organizing has led to significant progress in securing bodily rights, delivering justice to rape survivors, cementing gender equality into law, and ending violence."

Wisconsin Judge Halts "Extremely Broad and Largely Needless" Voter ID Law

Wisconsin's voter ID law, like many others introduced in 2011 and 2012, is based on an American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) model bill."

The Peace Movement Needs Kucinich, With or Without Congress
David Swanson, War Is a Crime: "If Congressman Dennis Kucinich becomes simply Dennis Kucinich sans the 'Congressman' his value to the peace movement need not diminish. I admit it's been nice having someone in Congress who would say and do what he would. There have been and remain other relatively strong voices for peace, but none as strong as Kucinich's. His resolutions have forced the debates. His bills have changed the conversation. His questioning of witnesses has afflicted the comfortable while seeking to comfort the afflicted. Perhaps Congressman Norman Solomon will pick up the baton. Time will tell."

Bill Quigley | Occupying Corporations: How to Cut Corporate Power
Bill Quigley, Truthout: "Corporations are obviously not people. But Romney is correct in the sense that corporations have hijacked most of the rights of people while evading the responsibilities. An important part of the social justice agenda is democratizing corporations. This means we must radically change the laws so people can be in charge of corporations. We must strip them of corporate personhood and cut them down to size so democracy can work. People are taking action so democracy can regulate the size, scope and actions of corporations."

Dina Rasor, Truthout: "In past years, it has not been surprising that the chairmen of the House of Representatives of the Armed Services Committee have taken many large campaign contributions from defense contractors. It has happened through many sessions of Congress and included both Republican and Democratic chairmen. So, an article on the current chairman of the Armed Services Committee taking campaign contributions from defense contractors would seem to be an obvious and redundant read. Dennis Kucinich Isn't Going Graciously

Rosie Gray:  Dennis Kucinich Isn't Going Graciouslyhttp://www.buzzfeed.com/rosiegray/dennis-kucinich-isnt-going-graciously

Dennis Kucinich said today that he has no plans to endorse his former friend and the winner of Ohio's 9th Congressional District seat, Marcy Kaptur.

"I haven't done that and I'm not sure I will," he said. "The problem is in politics if someone runs a gutter-level campaign, you're just expected to say it's OK and you move on. Marcy's been my friend for 30 years and I have to tell you, it was pretty surprising to me the kind of campaign that was run, it was more worthy of Karl Rove than Marcy Kaptur." ... http://www.buzzfeed.com/rosiegray/dennis-kucinich-isnt-going-graciously

CNSNews: Obama Supported Higher Gas Prices in 2008, but Now? ‘I Want to Get Gas Prices Lower’

Obama Supported Higher Gas Prices in 2008, but Now? ‘I Want to Get Gas Prices Lower’

(CNSNews.com) – President Barack Obama mocked a suggestion that he wants higher gasoline prices during an election year, although as a candidate in 2008 he suggested that higher prices might be desirable if there was a “gradual adjustment.”

During a news conference Tuesday, Fox News reporter Ed Henry asked Obama, “Your critics on Capitol Hill will say that you want gas prices to go higher because you have said before that will wean the American people off fossil fuels on to renewable fuels. How do you respond to that?”

Obama dismissed the question as ridiculous: …

On June 10, 2008 in an interview with CNBC’s John Harwood, then-candidate Barack Obama said, “Well, I think that we have been slow to move in a better direction when it comes to energy usage. And the president, frankly, hasn't had an energy policy. And as a consequence, we've been consuming energy as if it's infinite. We now know that our demand is badly outstripping supply with China and India growing as rapidly as they are.” … http://cnsnews.com/news/article/obama-supported-higher-gas-prices-2008-now-i-want-get-gas-prices-lower

The kerfuffle was no fluke
Kevin E. Dayhoff

Rush Limbaugh and conservatives could not have looked more like total and complete idiots in the recent national discussions over the private lives of individual Americans than if the liberal media and Democrats had written the script for this Kabuki circular firing squad.

Mr. Limbaugh’s utterly stupid attack on Sandra Fluke, whom Caroline May described in the Daily Caller last Saturday as “the beleaguered third-year Georgetown University Law Center student,” crossed the line for any fair-minded American whether one supports or vehemently disagrees with her views or her lifestyle.

Don Surber explained it well on Saturday when he called on Mr. Limbaugh to apologize. “What happened was simple: He tried to use a lefty way to counter what a lefty did. He tried to demonize her like the left did with Sarah Palin but he could not get away with that …”

So far in the presidential election of 2012 the only debate among historians is just which national election in history has the opposition party collectively conducted a more inept campaign to unseat a sitting president? ... http://www.thetentacle.com/ShowArticle.cfm?mydocid=4959

A story about a biker, US Marine, heroic acts and today’s liberal media

This pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these days

A Harley biker is riding by the zoo in Louisiana when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage.

Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, 'Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life.'

The Harley rider replies, 'Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.'

The reporter says, 'Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a journalist, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page...

So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?'

The biker replies, 'I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican.'

The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:

U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH

That pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these days...

BALTIMORE – Maryland residents do not have to provide a "good and substantial reason" to legally own a handgun, a federal judge ruled Monday, striking down as unconstitutional the state's requirements for getting a permit.

U.S. District Judge Benson Everett Legg wrote that states are allowed some leeway in deciding the way residents exercise their Second Amendment right to bear arms, but Maryland's objective was to limit the number of firearms that individuals could carry, effectively creating a rationing system that rewarded those who provided the right answer for wanting to own a gun... http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/03/05/federal-judge-rules-maryland-gun-permit-law-unconstitutional/

The Rush To Censor Limbaugh | Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/03/05/rush-to-censor-limbaugh/

Published March 05, 2012
| FoxNews.com

Rush Limbaugh was broadsided last week for attacking a star witness for the Democrats who demanded government force insurers to subsidize contraceptives. He called 30-year-old Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute.”

Let’s all agree Limbaugh crossed a line.

He agrees. He posted an apology to Fluke “for the insulting word choices.” ... http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/03/05/rush-to-censor-limbaugh/

The scandal-ette should be over.

So why are the Left and the media still pushing and publicizing a campaign for advertisers to dump the Limbaugh show and end his career?

Because it has little to do with his words. This is all about disingenuous politics. Liberals want this government-mandate controversy to be not about religious liberty, which is devastating, but about contraceptives, which works in their favor.

That is intellectually dishonest.

They want to position conservatives as “anti-women.” That’s as ugly as it is untrue. ... http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/03/05/rush-to-censor-limbaugh/
