Fri July 26, 2013
(CNN) -- Here's a look at what you need to know about the Korean War. July 27, 2013 marks 60 years since the signing of the armistice agreement that ended the fighting.
Causes of the Korean War
The 38th parallel division of Korea happened in August 1945, at the end of World War II. The 2 newly formed countries became ideologically opposite.
November 1947 - The United Nations General Assembly approves elections to be held throughout Korea to choose a provisional government for the entire county. The Soviet Union opposed this.
On May 10, 1948 the people of South Korea elected a national assembly. The assembly set up the government of the Republic of Korea. The people of north refused to take part. On September 9 North Korean Communists established the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Both sides claimed the entire country and their troops fought near the border several times from 1948 to 1950.
The United States removed its last troops from Korea in 1949 and in early 1950 North Korea decided upon war to achieve its goal of Korean unification under Communist rule.

Stopping government abuses that threaten our economy
Posted by Speaker Boehner's Press Office
July 28, 2013
General
Speaker Boehner filmed a brief video for this week’s Speaker Alert previewing upcoming legislation to stop government abuses that threaten our economy. Watch him here:
Two of the bills highlighted by Speaker Boehner – one to get the IRS out of ObamaCare and another to rein in federal red tape – were the subject of this week’s Republican address by Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA). “You deserve a government that works for you, not against you,” says Leader Cantor. Watch him here:
MORE FROM THE SPEAKER’S BLOG
- President Obama “pivots” to jobs … again: The White House more or less admits it took its eye off the ball … but that’s little comfort for Americans struggling with the “new normal” of slow economic growth and rising prices.
- Republicans have been focused on jobs all along: “Welcome to the conversation, Mr. President,” said Speaker Boehner – “we’ve never left it.” Here’s a look at GOP efforts to enact our Plan for Economic Growth & Jobs.
- Nothing “meaningless” about stopping the ObamaCare train wreck: President Obama says efforts to delay and dismantle his health care law are “meaningless,” ignoring that it’s driving up costs and hurting our economy – and that he’s signed into law seven bills repealing or defunding parts of it.
- Obama admin spoiling for a government shutdown: The president is threatening to veto any funding bills and shut down the government unless he gets another tax hike to fuel more ‘stimulus’-style spending.
- President Obama still blocking Keystone: Before the president asks families to pay for another round of ‘stimulus’ spending, he might consider getting out of the way of the private-sector projects he continues to block.
- “Americans aren’t asking ‘where are the speeches?’” If the president really wants “a better bargain” for families, Speaker Boehner says he’ll approve the Keystone XL pipeline, delay his health care law for everyone (not just big businesses), and stop threatening to shut down the government.
- Final student loan reform “almost identical” to House-passed bill: After letting interest rates on student loans double, Senate Democrats finally passed a permanent fix that’s fairer for students and taxpayers, and is almost identical to what Republicans passed two months ago. See our comparison.
- Fixing our broken immigration system: “We’re working on a common-sense, step-by-step approach,” says Speaker Boehner, which will secure our borders, fix our immigration system, and help our economy grow.
- Stopping government abuse: The House of Representatives will vote on 10 bills this week “designed to protect citizens from government overreach.” Read more, learn how you can cosponsor these bills, and join the discussion on Twitter this week using the hash tag #StopGovtAbuse.

LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
Dear Residents:
Thank you for the vote of confidence in re-electing me to
the Office of Mayor of the City of Westminster. Council Member Chiavacci was
also re-elected and Council Member Suzanne Albert will be returning to the
Council. We will continue to serve the residents of the City, provide a solid
financial foundation and revitalize downtown.
The following budget actions have been approved by the
Common Council:
• A one-cent reduction in the General Fund Property Tax from
.57 cents to .56 cents. This commitment to reduce the tax increase as capital
improvement projects were completed was made by the Mayor and Council when the
increase was adopted in 2009.
• No increase in water or sewer rates.
• Place the one-time highway user revenue in the Capital
Project Reserve account to use for emergency or one-time only projects since
there is no commitment for continuing this revenue source beyond this year.
• Included a 3% cost of living increase for our employees
who have exhibited their commitment and dedication to our residents during the
recession and who have not received an increase in five years.
• Added two emergency projects to the Priority One projects
funded by the tax increase: replacement of the furnaces in the Police
Department and partial replacement of the Skateboard Park. The other priority
capital projects include vehicle and equipment replacement, street overlay and
sidewalk replacement projects, repairs to City Hall and the Longwell Armory and
replacement of the SAN network.
• The budget is available for your review on our web site
www.westminstermd.gov.
