A family member returned to Inova Fairfax Hospital in northern Virginia for a follow-up procedure today.

Wed. April 27, 2016 a family member returned to Inova Fairfax Hospital in northern Virginia for a follow-up procedure today.

She also took the opportunity to have a reunion with many of the awesome nurses in the ICU unit where she spent much of this past Jan. and Feb. We really appreciated the opportunity to thank everyone from the bottom of our heart.

We had an incredibly positive experience with Fairfax Hospital. Not only was her medical care excellent, but everyone there was so nice, friendly and helpful, in spite of the fact that this is a huge, ginormous metropolitan Washington DC medical facility.

Everyone from the administration to the staff to the medical professionals went out if their way to be friendly, and helpful.

Our extended family practically lived there throughout her hospitalization and the hospital staff could not have been more accommodating.

Democratic Advocate, April 24, 1897: Coldest April for twenty years

A blast from the North bore down on this section Monday night, sending down the mercury to 26 at 7 o'clock on Tuesday morning. The weather was cold all day Tuesday. Ice formed Monday night and fruit buds were seriously damaged, it is thought. On Wednesday morning there was a heavy frost and ice formed in low places. This has been the coldest April for twenty years. In the West on Monday the mercury was down nearly to zero. Democratic Advocate, April 24, 1897.

Chicago Cubs Outfielder Rick Monday who served in the US Marine Corps saved the flag on April 25, 1976

Flag-saving moment still winning salutes

Updated 4/25/2006 2:49 AM ET By Bob Nightengale, USA TODAY

The hand was trembling, the voice was quivering, and tears were running down his face.

The World War II soldier, who survived the Pearl Harbor attack, looked Rick Monday in the eyes, slowly raised his right arm, and saluted him.

"Thank you," Monday recalls the soldier telling him last year. "And thank you from all of my shipmates."

Thirty years ago today, Monday became an American hero.

It was the day he saved the American flag.

"It was the greatest heroic act that's ever happened on a baseball field," Hall of Fame manager Tom Lasorda said. "He protected the symbol of everything that we live for. And the symbol that we live in the greatest country in the world."

The Hall of Fame recently voted Monday's act as one of the 100 classic moments in the history of the game. Monday, who spent 19 years in the major leagues and is a Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster, will be honored tonight with a video tribute at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

They'll replay a grainy videotape that was discovered in 1984 showing two people jumping over the railing in left field and spreading the American flag onto the Dodger Stadium turf. One man dousing the flag with lighter fluid. The other lighting a match. And Monday, playing for the Chicago Cubs, running in from center field, grabbing the flag and carrying it to safety.

They'll play Vin Scully's voice from the radio broadcast: "Wait a minute, there's an animal loose. Two of them! I'm not sure what he's doing out there. It looks like he's going to burn a flag. ...

"And Rick Monday runs and takes it away from him!"

And perhaps the crowd will duplicate the same reaction as 30 years ago: sitting in stunned silence, then standing, cheering, and spontaneously singing God Bless America.

October 20, 2013: Carroll County firefighters respond to fire at Vetville in Westminster

October 20, 2013: Carroll County firefighters respond to fire at Vetville in Westminster http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2013/10/october-20-2013-carroll-county.html

By Kevin E. Dayhoff, kevindayhoff@gmail.com Sunday, October 20, 2013

Carroll County volunteer firefighters from throughout the county responded Sunday afternoon to a laundry room fire at “Vetville” in the 100 unit block of Wimert Avenue, near Sullivan Avenue and Route 140 in northwest Westminster.

The complex, known locally as “Vetville,” dates back to 1946, when the housing units were built “by the government for the GIs who are attending or will attend Western Maryland College under the GI Bill of Rights,” according to a newspaper account in the now-defunct Democratic Advocate.

“A one-story construction, set up on cement blocks, with a brick-like celetex finish, they will fill the hopes of many GIs who plan to finish their education with their families. The apartments are made up of living room, two bedrooms, two closets and a kitchen, to be fully equipped with sink, stove and refrigerator…”

It is believed that the last fire occurred in Vetville on November 2, 2003, when, “A two-alarm fire … destroyed a four-unit apartment building in Westminster, but its eight residents, including two children, escaped without injuries,” according to an article in the Baltimore Sun.

April 11, 1992 Dr. L. Earl Griswold, professor at Western Maryland

April 11, 1992 Dr. L. Earl Griswold, professor at Western Maryland Obituary

http://kevindayhoffwestgov-net.blogspot.com/2016/04/april-11-1992-dr-l-earl-griswold.html

Dr. Griswold was a fixture at the Westminster United Methodist Church. I grew up in the Westminster United Methodist Church and spent much of my childhood, going back to the 1950s, at Western Maryland College – now McDaniel. I have the vaguest memories of Old Main…. Up until the early 1970s, the college was affiliated with the Methodist Church. I was part of the first summer church camps that were integrated at the college. And I have fond memories of talking with Dr. Ensor about the integration of the college.

I have very clear and fond memories of Dr. Griswold. In addition to my memories of Dr. Griswold at church and up at the college, he was also the dad of a Westminster High School Class of 1971 classmate.

He was very kind and always had time for those of us who had a keen interest in the college and the academic – and religious worldview. I was especially intrigued with his films – and his interest in traveling and documenting his travels.

I use many things I learned from Dr. Griswold – to this day. We should never forget the folks who went before us and paved the way for the infrastructure and community we enjoy today.

I had saved a place in my writing schedule to write about him upon the anniversary of his death, but once again, this year, current events have overtaken that opportunity. Perhaps I’ll do it anyway out of linear sequence. I’m not much a fan of linear history anyway. Just saying. God Bless you and your work, Dr. Griswold…..

Services for L. Earl Griswold, retired chairman of the sociology department at Western Maryland College, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Westminster United Methodist Church.

Dr. Griswold, who was 71, died Thursday after an apparent heart attack at his home in Westminster. He retired five years ago as chairman of the sociology department, and had taught courses in anthropology at the college since 1956.

In the 1970s, he made films, many of them on deafness and others on anthropological research in conjunction with the college, and also promotional films for Carroll County and other Maryland subdivisions.

In 1972, one of the films on deafness, "They Grow in Silence," won an award from the Public Broadcasting System. The college for many years has had an extensive degree program accommodating deaf students.

[…]

During World War II, he flew B-17s in Europe for the Army Air Corps. He was a psychological warfare officer for the Air Force during the Korean War.

Irony Ensues after VA Secretary Asked Famous Veteran To Contact him

Irony Ensues after VA Secretary Asked Famous Veteran To Contact him

Nov. 12, 2015 – April 4, 2016

Always remember that at this point there are compelling and persuasive arguments for a single-payer health insurance public policy. Folks who advocate for such an approach are to be respected. Because of the Healthcare Affordability Act – Obamacare, insurance is rapidly becoming so expensive that employers can no longer afford it.

And because of the Healthcare Affordability Act, more and more individuals do not have health care coverage. Bankruptcies as a result of the cost of healthcare are rapidly increasing – and medicine has become so bureaucratized that one may wonder if the purpose of the healthcare delivery system today is to adhere to the rules of the Dept. of Health and Human Services or see to it that the patient gets better.

However, the biggest argument against a single-payer healthcare system run by the government is the healthcare provided by the Veterans Administration – motto: giving you a second chance to die for your country.

40 firefighters from Carroll and Baltimore Counties respond to Westminster house fire

40 firefighters from Carroll and Baltimore Counties respond to #Westminster house #fire http://kevindayhoff.blogspot.com/2016/04/40-firefighters-from-carroll-and.html

Dry conditions at the end of winter and early spring only heighten the fire danger out there. Please have a safe spring.

Firefighters and first responders see a little too much of each other in the spring. The fire marshal’s office and the Carroll County fire departments take this opportunity to remind you to not have first responders over to your house this spring as uninvited guests.

“Although we are very friendly, this time of the year, we are way too serious to attend your spring get-together in the event of a fire. Ensure your guests are aware of all available exits if a fire would occur… The leading cause of fires in the kitchen are unattended cooking and carelessly discarded cigarette.

Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. And if you are going to be careless, have extra food available in case 40 firefighters need to stop by in the middle of the day to come tromping through your house. Happy spring from your local Carroll County fire department of the fire marshal’s office.

Westminster fire department chaplain and public information officer Kevin E. Dayhoff

After fire, Westminster home ruled uninhabitable

A house on West George Street is uninhabitable after a fire Thursday afternoon.

A two-story wood dwelling caught on fire because of discarded smoking material, according to a news release from the State Fire Marshal's Office.

The Fire Marshal's Office ruled that the fire's cause was accidental. No injuries were reported, but the fire caused about $10,000 worth of damage to the structure, according to the release.

The Westminster Volunteer Fire Company was called to a fire in the unit block of West George Street at about 2:11 p.m., with a call for rapid intervention coming nine minutes later, said Kevin Dayhoff, spokesman for the fire company.

This is where a consumer may file a complaint about Comcast with the FCC

Chapter VIII of Part 1 of Don Quixote is titled, “Of the valorous Don Quixote’s success in the dreadful and never before imagined Adventure of the Windmills, with other events worthy of happy record.”

According to Cervantes, the first encounter between the windmills and Don Quixote went like this: “Just then they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that rise from that plain. And no sooner did Don Quixote see them that he said to his squire, “Fortune is guiding our affairs better than we ourselves could have wished. Do you see over yonder, friend Sancho, thirty or forty hulking giants? I intend to do battle with them and slay them. With their spoils we shall begin to be rich for this is a righteous war and the removal of so foul a brood from off the face of the earth is a service God will bless.”

“What giants?” asked Sancho Panza?

“Those you see over there,” replied his master, “with their long arms. Some of them have arms well-nigh two leagues in length.”

“Take care, sir,” cried Sancho. “Those over there are not giants but windmills. Those things that seem to be their arms are sails which, when they are whirled around by the wind, turn the millstone.”

In regard to a friend’s Facebook post on March 9, 2016 regarding Comcast customer service….

I was amused that many folks recommended FIOS. Take a memo, there is no difference between Comcast’s customer service and Verizon’s.

Actually, every time you see a commercial by Comcast about how easy it is to move an existing Comcast service from one home to the next when you move; please realize that it is excruciatingly difficult to move your service and when folks move is when most folks ‘cut the cord’ because the customer service involved in moving your service from one home to the next is so horrific.

Sort of like walking into the office of a service provider, such as a medical health care office and you are greeted by a large sign that explains that customer service is so important to them – it is because that office has horrid customer service – and some faceless bureaucrat exercised corporate creativity and decided to solve the problem in true Orwellian fashion by posting a sign.

It is called “paper performance.” Solving a problem by checking-off a box that says that the problem has been addressed. Of course, nothing has been solved and if anything the customer service gets worse.

All that said, several years ago I called the Maryland Public Service Commission about a horrid customer service challenge with Verizon and talked with a very nice person who explained that she understood my complaint and admitted that the PSC receives many such complaints, but there was nothing that could be done. In the end, I solved the problem by cancelling my land phone line and DSL service.

A close friend explained that calling Comcast was like having a root canal without anesthesia. Extremely painful, but once it is over you feel better… Whatever.

Currently, I have to call both Verizon and Comcast about a family member’s service issues and I am absolutely dreading it. I guess, you might say that both Verizon and Comcast have attempted to solve the number of customer service complaints by making it so horrid to call them that folks simply do not call.

Meanwhile, it has been said that the greatest hoax in life is the hope for safety. I simply have lost any hope that government or the regulatory agencies will address the horrid customer service of Verizon and Comcast. And sadly the marketplace will not solve the horrid service by Verizon and Comcast anytime soon. There is no incentive to improve the services they provide. Eventually it will be solved. But I am not holding my breath.

Maybe the only satisfaction that we may receive is to inundate the FCC with complaints. It may be a quixotic exercise at tilting at windmills but we may simply get some therapeutic benefit from the primal screaming. Just saying.

Filing a complaint
If you experience a problem with your broadband service, first try to resolve it with your provider. If you cannot resolve the problem directly, you have multiple options for filing a complaint with the FCC:

By phone: 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322); TTY: 1-888-TELL-FCC (1-888-835-5322); ASL Videophone: 1-844-432-2275

By mail (please include your name, address, contact information and as much detail about your complaint as possible):

One of the lucid analyses of the SCOTUS nomination of Merrick Garland has been written by @natesilver538

One of the lucid analyses of the SCOTUS nomination of Merrick Garland has been written by @natesilver538

March 16, 2016

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Kevin E. Dayhoff, March 22, 2016 - I do not think that I am going to write about this - so what the heck... I have written a great deal about the local, state and federal judiciary in the past, including covering conferences on the courts and its historic relationship with the presidency. So if I end-up writing an article, please feel free to throw this comment in my face. Whatever.

Although one cannot fully predict the decisions and judicial temperament of an individual once a justice takes a seat on the bench, all indications are that Merrick Garland would be a fine justice.

It is a basic in politics that if you go nuclear with your initial response and approach, it denies you a fall-back position. It is a basic that if you are going to undermine an opponent’s position, you do not telegraph your intentions.

The approach of the current Republican leadership towards appointing a justice to replace Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Antonin Gregory Scalia, 1986-2016, is amateurish at best.

And at this point, if things continue in its current trajectory, the next president will be President Clinton. And she will have the benefit of a Democrat controlled Senate because if things continue the way they are going, the Senate will flip to the Democrats in the next election.

So - this might be the most wrong-headed political approach towards governance in memory - maybe since President F.D. Roosevelt tried to pack the court.... Bring back the monarchy.

Post script: If the Senate moves 11 seats to the Democrats, President Obama could very easily be narrowly confirmed as a justice of the Supreme Court - all as courtesy of the current leadership of the Republican Party. SMH. For me it is a win-win. I get to write about it.

++++++++++++++++++++

KMS - at this point, from the viewpoint of a political scientist that has written about politics for 45-years; all indications are that the Senate will swing to the Democrats in the next election. Trump will not prevail against Clinton. If I were a conspiratorialist, I would suggest that Trump's candidacy was brought forward by a secret cabal of Democrat party elites. LOL See: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/us/general_election_trump_vs_clinton-5491.html

Meanwhile, on March 16, 2016, Nate Silver wrote, in part:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that Republicans won’t hold hearings on Judge Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nominee to replace Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. If McConnell follows through and makes everyone wait until next year, he and his party will be taking a serious risk. The political situation for Republicans could get a lot worse — and McConnell might no longer be in charge of the Senate.

The logic of this isn’t that complicated. Right now, the most likely person to become the next president is Hillary Clinton, who is on the verge of wrapping up the Democratic nomination. The second most likely person is Donald Trump. His path to the Republican nomination is more tenuous than Clinton’s path to the Democratic one. But Trump had a successful day of elections on Tuesday — and if it isn’t obvious how Trump will get to 1,237 delegates, it’s even less obvious how anyone else will become the Republican nominee.
