Republican Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou won the special election in Hawaii's 1st district to replace Neil Abercrombie, a 10-term Democratic congressman who resigned to run for governor.
Djou had been leading in recent public polls in the winner-takes-all contest -- largely as a result of a feud between two Democratic candidates that has splintered their party's base. The win hands the Republican Party a symbolic victory in its bid to regain control of Congress.
