Cardin visit to New Windsor campus recalls history, mission

Cardin's visit draws our attention to two local institutions -- both with international stature and extraordinary ecumenical background.

On Sept. 6, 1944, the former Blue Ridge College property in New Windsor was purchased for $31,300 for use as a world relief center.
According to its website, "What began ... in 1960 as Interchurch Medical Assistance has not simply survived. ... Instead, it has become a thriving, vital, significant contributor to the health of millions."
IMA works in Haiti, the Congo, Tanzania, Sudan, India, Togo and many other nations. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, IMA will host an event for partners and supporters Oct. 6...

U.S. Senator Cardin greets Brethren Service Center volunteer Becky Motley during the senator's visit to the New Windsor center Sept. 8. Motley was packing quilts for shipment to overseas clinics and joked that she planned to put Cardin to work. The senator took part in a luncheon and accepted thanks from the center for his support in helping to locate three staff members of the center's Interchurch Medical Assistance service who were stranded in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, after the January 2010 earthquake.
