Westminster, Saturday, January 23, 2016 – Due to the severity of Winter Storm Jonas and the present blizzard conditions, Carroll County Commissioner Stephen A. Wantz, President, declared a Local State of Emergency in Carroll County, Maryland, beginning at 8:00 a.m. today, Saturday, January 23, 2016. The order authorizes agencies to activate the county’s Emergency Operations Plans and take such actions as are necessary to protect lives during this emergency.

In order to protect the lives of citizens and facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles, all individuals are requested to refrain from operating vehicles on any county-owned or maintained road until the state of emergency is terminated by Commissioner Wantz.

“I am activating the Local State of Emergency because the winter storm is challenging our public resources,” said Commissioner Wantz. “Our utmost concern is for the safety and wellbeing of the citizens of Carroll County and this emergency declaration will facilitate our response and the deployment and sharing of resources. We ask our citizens to stay home and stay off the roads during this winter storm.”

County officials emphasize that in the case of an emergency; citizens should call 911 and not travel in personal vehicles.

I've been doing this stuff for 45 years and I have a heavy 4-wheel drive truck and even I have just stayed home. This stuff is for the young responders... Some days I feel my age. Some days I know my age.”
